The problem is resolved. The alternator belt was badly worn and is now replaced. Also there was some rust collected in the bottom of the water hose connecting to the pump, that I cleaned and put in new coolant.

So a worn belt can cause water pump failure? Wouldn't the alternator indicate failing as well? By lighting up the low charge light in the dash?

What you mention is called a drive shaft. It's probably the wheel side. I don't know on your particular transmission model if you can replace only the side by the wheel or the whole drive shaft, as is the case with mine.
