I now a GTI16 with an aftermarket A/C, so one way or another it fits.

no..I live in Uruguay...in Uruguay 309 thera are a lot....309GTI are only 2 actives..and only one GTI16

:ghee: wow, your boss is very lucky to have it! so i guess the modification you're carrying on is a common practice over there right? I imagine the 8v GTI's were in limited number too... i didn't know there were 309 in Brazil!... GTI only 8....now only 2 are alive..and one of them have an Mi16 insi...

That's the answer....aparently...the A/C compresor does not fit if you have an Mi16 engine ina 309 engine bay... :S
