Steering wheel hard to turn

Good day everybody!

I wanted to ask if anyone came across such an issue. My steering has gradually become extremely hard to turn. Earlier I could turn the wheel with one hand, not only while driving, but also when parking. Lately it has become so hard to steer that I am getting tired in my arms when driving in the city for a longer time. What should I check first? Could the problem be resolved by loosening the bolts on the steering rack? the two that apply pressure to the gear that moves the rack piston.

The car has NO power steering.

Thnaks!

Well, I remember you checked the drive shafts, are they in good condition?

Are you sure your stearing system is not used?

the left one is a bit damaged, but I filled it up with grease and put on a new boot, so it's better now, and the right one is new. the steering rack was dismantled about 6 months ago and everything is in order. new boots fitted and new grease here also, new trailing arms and the ball joints on the ends of the steering rack are new as well.

I don't know what you mean. Of course it is used, it's the factory one.

If you rise your two front wheels, can you turn easily your wheels? Do you feel a blocking point?

Will have to check that. But the last time I balanced my wheels I remember there was no problem like that and the steering was also heavy.

Does the steering wheel come back as it should?

No, when you make a U turn then it fails to get back completely. it lacks about 1/4 turn

Oh, good to know. Have a look at your front suspension mountings.

I am almost sure that it is not in the suspension mounting, but the lower trailing arm that is connected to the hub via a ball joint and then to the sub-frame and roll-bar. I think the ball joints are worn, because when I brake there is a distinct metal skweeking sound and when I reverse to park there is a loud "dum" coming from the same spot. Will have to disassemble the whole front suspension. I need to get everything in order.

Well, first, double check the suspensions. Then, have a look at the steering column bulkhead.

i fixed my problem by putting some anti-corrosive on the articulated joints on the steering column, in the engine compartment and under the dashboard

I will have to try the same, because I have exams now and no time to take everything apart. Thanks for the tip!
