Hi, I have a 1986 Peugeot 309 GT with 176000km and the 82kW XU92C engine.

Currently I have a semi-synthetic elf competition ST 10w40 oil which I want to change. I know it is a poor quality oil and I want a higher quality one. Someone told me that any engine would benefit from a change from 10w to 5w, is this true of this engine?

I was looking at the Total quartz 9000 (5w40) or the quartz 7000 (10w40)...anything better than these?

First of all, you need to introduce yourself in the appropriate section.
Then, Peugeot recommends 10w40 oils. I don't think there's any benefit in putting a 5W40 oil in those engines. Plus when they're old, they tend to leak so a more viscous oil is not recommended. I buy 10W40 oils for both of my 309s (GTI and non-GTI) and the Total Quartz 7000 is a very good oil. There's the Castrol GTX too.

I am the same opinion as Aurélien. The motors are designed for 10W40 and work with it perfectly. I always use 10W40 oil that is filled at Peugeot every year (original Peugeot Oil from my Peugeot-dealer). Only poorer quality, I would not recommend it. However, But I've also thought about to try 5W40 or 5W30 oil...

I already tried 5W40 (on a XU5-2C) and I will advise against it ...

The engine uses too much oil, probably because it is more fluid.

On a XU engine 8 valves, the best viscosity is 10W40. On a TU engine, I prefer the 15W40 (less noise because of the tippers)

In the end I went with the total quartz 7000 energy (10w40), I put it in today.

I hope this solves the problem with the oil getting very hot, around 115 degrees

I don't think the oil is the problem. I have used the Elf Competition ST in the past and even though it's not the best oil on the market, it's definitely not the worst and is way above average.

The Shell hellix plus is a good one,10w40

I'm not sure. Last year, in the summer it rarely reached 100. And now even in this rather cold weather, when I drive more it reaches 110-115, the water stays at 70-80.

Almost all the coolant is new and the water pump as well, also I removed the air from the cooling system, but only through one of the holes, the one behind the air filter. I know from my mechanic that there is another one just above the engine, but he says the cap is stuck and he advised against forcing it...

When it was newer, 5-7 years ago, the oil stayed at exactly 90

Well, I don't know about that... And I don't think my mechanic knows how to calibrate it.

I saw that the idle speed isn't smooth at all... The carburetor was calibrated last summer, but I think I need to go again to that guy...

The mileage I get isn't either as it says in the book... It consumes 13.5 l/100km, last I checked, but this could be because of the cold weather to. In december I got 16 l/100km lol
