Finally I found a GTI!

So guys, it has been a long long time since I last was on the forum.

If anyone remembers, I used to own a 1.3 Simca PH1 5door. But i crashed it beyond any repair.

Thereafter I bought a white 1.4 Tu3. It was with me for a year, done with it over 50K km very little maintenance, was a fun drive non the less.

And finally by accident I bought a red GTI 8v. Now i know it has a lot of work to be put in it, but I am willing to do what it takes to bring it to a great condition. I firstly started restoring the spotlights and fog lights because its winter and they are very useful in the dense fog here. i found original speed line 15 alloys and bought them too.

No, actually they are very rare nowadays. And I haven't seen a GTi for sale in ages. My hope is I will be able to buy one more or two break them for parts and storage everything.

Thanks guys! i will give my best to get it mint!

The items I need to address in the near future are the steering rack and pump. I was thinking of wiring in an electric 106 PAS pump and reconditioning the right steering bushing. I'll make a new one from hard plastic on a late. Not sure how I'm gonna go about the seats. My friend who got a 205 had his seats done but I kinda dislike the fabric.

This was also my guess, as I think the body has a lot of rust behind the headlamps. The doors are in great condition on the lower edge and the trunk is not yet attacked by moisture.

The steering rack bushing is made out of metal, mainly steel but bronze on the working part. You can use a full bronze bushing. You must heat a little the steering box when fitting the new bushing, without this it can crack.
The electric pump will work but is probably not as reliable as the original, you can find the piping (and the pump) on one of the last 205 diesel:

For your seats you can scavenge the fabric from a 106 color line.

SRDTURBO, could you please take me step by step through the process of reconditioning the rack? I am very grateful for the help. Some pictures would also help and tolerances to watch out for when I have the rack out.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. In the cap of the PAS reservoir there is a magnet? I can find a lot of metal shavings in the cap. But the pump is only acting up on full turn. To the right more than the left. Is all this rack related or pump related. There is no characteristic grinding noise coming from the pump yet.

Metal shavings? Bad news for the seals. Maybe you better change the steering rack, a 205, ZX or 306 one should do the trick as many people have done it ; just put 309 tie rods on the new rack.

Hello,

pretty nice find, a 5-doors GTi is really rare, specially as a Mk2.
Seems the seats are done. Theres some work to do I think, but it can be done.

Mk1 5-doors are rare as they wasn't available for long but the Mk2 is less.
