Thats what I thought. Here and there you can find a 5-door Mk 1 GTi for sale ( if youre very lucky ) but I have never seen a Mk 2 for to buy here in germany. Same all countrys around. Only two ( over ten years ) in swiss.

Hope the condition of your red one allows you to keep it alive. Where are you located? Maybe I can help with some parts you need ....

No, not that far. I live in germany, 50Km south-east from Munich.

I bought myself a GTi and want to change the interieur so I will have some GTi Frontseats to give away. Maybe some other GTi parts.

Make clear if its a set out of a 5doors car. What do you want with leather seats with doorpanels for a 3 doors model!?

Leatherseats are more easier to "repair" than the typical GTi seats cause you cant get the checked stuff anywhere if you want your car originally.

Guys, we had a little incident with the GTI. I've done with it about 5-6K km and after a longer FAST ride in the morning it was very hard to crank. Started after quite some trouble and could not idle at all. Then after 10min the white smoke came from the tail pipe and then water started cumming from the exhaust. The head gasket went completely between the 2nd and 3rd cylinders, with compression escaping from the 1st as well.

My mistake was not draining the coolant all the way, but as I replaced the oil, filters, cambelt, tensioner, waterpump, coolant, gaskets, thermostat, sensors, spark plugs, spark leads, rotor arm, distributor cap....

The engine now runs smooth and great. BUT there is a problem. I lost a lot of power as opposed prior to opening it up.
For the life of me I cant figure out why. Compression is great. I compensated for head skimming by a thicker head gasket. The only thing I can think of is wrong ignition timing. But I dont know and cant find any info on the dizzy.

There is no connector on it, nor is there a vacuum advance. What kind of engine managment is this, and how do i go about the timing? Please I am very sad as I feel like I've lost 1/3 power in the lower 4K range.

Do you have a part number to identify it? Vacuum advance should be present.
LE-Jetronic is a really primitive engine management by today standards, an analogic injection management in fact. The ignition timing is purelly mechanical with electronics just to get rid of the points inside.

Degrees are on crank.

I suppose that the camshaft timing is now what the manual said it should be but is it the same than before the repair?

I didnt make point of the camshaft timing. My bad. The spark wont fire if i disconnect the crank sensor.

Wait a minute, is your GTI a 130hp ou a 122hp with catalyst?
The cat version doesn't have vacuum advance but a motronic ignition and injection system.

122hp,88kw originally, but the cat is removed. So yes DKZ engine, Motronic 1.3.
Now there is a new thing happening, all the lights are flickering with the engine running. Like a missfire, but there is no missfire as the engine runs perfectly still and the rpm is constant. Could it be the ignition coil is on its way out and returning high voltage to the low voltage system?

Are you talking about main lights? Have you checked the GND on your car? There are GND connections on each front fender.

It was every light on the car. Voltage regulator had a fault. But there is a more pressing issue.
The head gasket has gone once more. It seams the liners had moved as i put on the head. So here we go again.

If the liners moved you must change the o-rings:

Still thinking about removing the liners. But the problem was in the head bolts came loose. Out of the blue the bolts corroded, they got all full of holes. As it seems I should have replaced the bolts, but they didn't look nearly as bad as they do now. I drove 3K km after head gasket was changed.

Anyway, this time I want to ask about the tightening of the head. I followed the instructions which came with the gasket: tighten to 50nm, slacken, tighten to 20nm and add 300 degrees. Is this wrong?
