The cable shouldn't be taken out of the plastic housing! you can never fit it back as it was and that is prone to cause the needle wobbling. But the problem can be also on the transmission side. In my case it was fairly difficult to put the cable back, but i managed. you need to take your car out of gear and then hold the cable firmly onto the transmission. As you hold the cable you need to move your car forwards or backwards, it doesn't matter until the cable goes in completely, then you fit the security pin. You can also check that there might be a strain on the cable, because the grommet at the entry to the cabin might need to be moved to allow more cable to the speedo.

But I must add, the Simca 1.3 has a very different transmission side on the cable than any other engine. I could send you the Haynes manual if it helps.

So I should get a new cable?

My advice is to get a new one. But be aware, I couldn't find the original so I had one made. It was a disaster. It tore my speedo to bits. So now I have a third speedo and I bought a cable taken from another car, original, factory made.

The speedo cable is the same for all 309s, except GTIs. You can find one new at any Peugeot dealer, they still sell it.

I beg to differ, the transmissions B1/5 and B3/5 are with a different cable. the side to the speedo is the same, but the side to the transmission is different. I think you know that most 309s have the little metal circle with a groove, and simca has a rectangular metal cable running into the transmission.

Also I wanted to share my experience with different instrument panels...

When I had my speedometer issue I tried fitting a diesel instrument panel.

First the result was that the engine wouldn't start, then it started and cut out in mid drive

So, don't anybody try to do this I think I was the only one stupid enough to try this.

I was talking about the speedometer cable and they are all the same, except for GTIs. You are talking about the speedometer drive but this is not part of the cable. The only thing that changes is the speedometer drive, which is normal since there were different transmission models.

Completely! It was a real coffin. All done and finished, only thing missing was the dead guy.

So did you check inside to see there was no body? And why don't authorities remove it from there?

it was open and there was nobody inside. I think that they removed it the next day. I took this picture when I was returning form a friend on the outskirts of town.
