That's a pity. I hope it can be saved. Has this engine done 675000km. :ghee:

Yes, this one is the original from the factory. It was never opened. A lot of spare parts, but the head was never lifted.

I drained the oil, which had begun to burn and stick, put in some new one. Put in more coolant and it started. Easily. But as soon as it starts and gets hot to about 70,80 degrees it starts heavily smoking at the rocker arm cover. I open the oil cap and there is a lot of mist and smoke coming out. But there is no smoking on the dipstick.

Could it be that the valves or head are damaged? What action do you recommend? I have to drive about 70km to my best mechanic in whose garage I feel at home. But I don't know if it can take the strain?

I am looking at this car for maybe buying it http://www.polovniautomobili.com/oglas2 ... ugeot_309/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Do you have some advice on what to watch for? I owned only the gasoline engine, so I am completely novice in diesel engines.

Peugeot says that an engine in good condition can consume 1 liter of oil in 1000km maximum. This one looks good with a Bosch pump, EGR (you better disable it) and power steering.

It seems the end of you engine... and perhaps your 309. Is it hard to find another engine (quite) easily?

Guys you are welcome to visit any time! I am a passionate cook, and am told by friends who are not from here that our national cuisine is very nice and different. But as i think of it, who's better at cuisine than the French...

I found an replacement engine. At 150eur it doesn't sound that bad. But maybe it will go with just a head swap, as I notice, the head is a bit bent, or as i can see it being so, bent a lot :D

Everybody thinks I am nuts to invest in this car. I need backup!

I would say just have a look on the spare engine and check it. It is high possible that it is better than your actual.

So I started the engine today, noticed that water was again missing, so it is leaking somewhere even when the engine is not running. There is no white smoke at the tail pipe, so I don't think the water is going into the cylinders, but it seams there is a crack somewhere.

I will go for the replacement engine. But still, I'll open my old engine to see the damage. I am curious at what is going on inside.

The little camera that amilo123 bought would come in handy to look inside the bores in the meantime.

Could it not been the head gasket. Or is the head broken? Curious what the problem is.

I have a lot of exams at the time. So when time permits I will open the engine. I noticed a piece of red seal on the oil cap. Like a piece of silicone, it could easily be a part of the gasket, but it beats me how it could get on the oil cap.

How is the car now? Did you manage to fix the engine?

I put in some Wurt sealant for the cooling system. That fixed the water leak, as on the gasket, so the water pump, and the thermostat housing. I've added about 3500km to the engine since then :D So no major repairs but a quick fix. Now i know the next time something happens, the engine must be exchanged.

Wow, impressive for such a high mileage engine.
