Dashboard exchange: from Phase 1 to Phase 2

I wanted to know if it is possible to exchange the Phase 1 dashboard for a Phase 2 Dashboard? My Dashboard is brown, so what are the chances of finding a brown phase 2 dashboard?

Also, what are common problems when doing this that I should expect?

Some did this but honestly, the work is too long and I wouldn't change it if I were you. When you remove the dashboard you've got as many chances to win the lottery as to not break any of the three fixings (if not the three at once). Plus, the chances to find a brown one are quite bad...

thanks for the answer, I will see what I will do, because my dashboard is in bad shape, cracks have shown up everywhere...

Well, if your dashboard has cracks everywhere, then change it but be very careful when doing so. If you can find a mk1 dashboard with the same colour, then don't hesitate because the mk2 dashboards are not better, really not.

You can change yout mk1 dashboard for a mk2 dashboard but you will have to drill the metal behind the dashboard, under the windscreen

Could you point out where the drilling will be? and give me some tips if you have experience...

is it one of the upper nuts holding it to the windshield, or is it down, near the center console?

Yeah that's it. it is near in the driver side, behind the dashboard. You have a sheet steel in metal ;)

I wouldn´t change the dashboard from Mk 1 to Mk 2 one. So the car wouldn´t be original. I would change it to the original one from Mk 1. I did souch a change 2 years ago at my Mk 2 (mine was broken at many points because of the sun) - it is not really a funny work, but it is possible. I did it at one day and now it looks like new - and is original!

Yep, exactly. Plus I noticed that cars that are highly modified do not sell. I know someone who modified a lot his car and it was impossible to sell it. He had to lower the price and finally he sold it for nothing.

Aurelien, you saw today that the GTIs go for 1200-1400 and the GL and GR go for 1500, and the diesels go for 1900! here in serbia...

Yes!! Very strange by the way. In France, GTI models are much more expensive!

I think it's because these models are very complicated and not a lot of mechanics are able to deal with them, thus, it's a lot of hands-on work. And, as you said earlier, the GTIs are fragile, and the roads here... :)
